Mamaka School Project sponsored by Sierra Leone Village Partnerships, Inc., was started in February of 2007 as a pilot project under the supervision of our president, J. Albert Kamara. The project was initially estimated at $ 30,000 with no cap set, and no time limit as to when the project would be completed, as the progress and completion of the project is 100% dependent on funds availability. Currently, funding is 100% provided by charitable donations which are unpredictable and not guaranteed to some extent, boosted, of course, by the relentless effort of our fundraising chairlady, Ms Maureen McNamara, and other members of SLVP.
The construction has been done in phases based on the amount of funding available:
Phase II: Bricks & Walls; estimated coast for this phase was $6,000, phase completed in March 2008. Funding provided by our generous and dedicated donors all over the US and funds raised by our Fundraising Committee members. Phase III: Walls, Beams, & Roof; estimated cost was $13,000; the actual cost to complete this phase was $16,352.00. Work at this phase started in May 8, 2008 and near completion the end of June, 2008. Funding for this phase was also provided by our donors with the help of our fundraising committee members. Phase IV: Electrical Wiring; estimated at $3,200; work started and finished between August 18 and 22, 2008; funding provided by our donors and funds raised by our fundraising committee during our annual meeting July, 2008 Phase V: Plastering, Paving, Doors & Windows Installation Ceiling and Painting; this phase has been estimated at $11,809. Base on our past experience with estimates from our contractor’s estimates, SLVP has decided to round this figure to $15,000 to avoid any future out of pocket expense to our ground overseers. As a not-for-profit charitable organization we strongly depend on our donors to help finish this project before the end of this fall. Your tax deductible donations are highly solicited and anticipated. Thus far the cost of the project has jumped by nearly 25% more than our original estimate. This is mainly due to inflation, cost of oil in the world market, and the fall in value of the dollar. The inability of our local contractors to figure accurate estimates which in turn lead to under estimation of the cost of construction has attributed to inaccuracies of our estimated cost of the project. Thanks to our donors, we are able to come this far with our charitable work in Sierra Leone for the village communities.

Phase I: Foundation; this was started and completed in February 2007; estimated coast was $4,000. Funding for this phase was provided by contributions from descendants of Mamaka village living in the United States, donations from members of SLVP prior to being incorporated, and SLVP president.
